Time and technology march on but what is not apparent is which way they are marching. The scratchy gramophone record was replaced by the eight track then the cassette and now the DVD and the I pod. I received for Christmas several DVD movies oh boy, remember the good old days with those clunky videocassettes$%: Back then you pushed the primitive stone age device in the slot and sat down to watch the movie. Now thanks to the magic of DVD's you press power, then open, then open again provided you have already removed it from its easy open packaging.

OK I understand retailers are getting ripped off and have to protect themselves but come on these packages are sealed against nuclear disaster. We remove the cellophane and then begin working on disabling the sealing tape then remove the security devise. Now opening the package we determine which rubix cube puzzle they have used to mount the DVD to the case. Now we are ready to relax and enjoy the movie right$%:

You've installed the DVD disk in your player and hit play; first what language did you want to hear the movie in$%: Do you want wide screen$%: Or letterbox$%: Do you want to hear the director's comments about how hot it was or how cold it was while they were filming the picture$%: Do you want to watch the deleted scenes$%: Or are you just and old fuddy duddy and want to just watch the movie, but not yet oh no, no, no. Your must first watch the warning the FBI and Interpol are gunning for you if you do anything illicit with this DVD They can't catch Osama Bin Laden but buddy they know where you live! Now just to be on the safe side we are going to play it again in French just to make sure you Canadian's and Cajuns don't slip through the cracks.

You know I might buy the illegal copies if they didn't have all that junk on them (hint to pirates) because you know what$%: Were not through yet, back in the old days children in the days of dinosaurs and video cassettes you could fast forward through the previews but not any more that circle with a slash through it that used to mean stop now it means stop and watch this sucker we command it! Ten years from now I might take it into my head to rewatch this motion picture but before I am allowed to by the movie gods they must make sure that I know that "Ice Age 2" is now available on DVD.

The unmitigated arrogance to force you to watch anything on a DVD that's for purchase, it's one thing if I want to watch the previews my wife does but I don't. But to override the fast-forward feature during the previews is gross arrogance. Imagine buying a book with commercials inserted and you're not permitted to open the book until you listen to them and then listen again every time you try and open the book!

So, now you've cracked the code paid your penance to the gods of advertising and your just about to relax and watch the movie when the picture freezes and the message comes up on the screen CORRECTING DISK ERROR. Pardon me is it the disk has an error on it$%: How could that be$%: So as you stare at the frozen image on your screen you ask yourself, well, what now$%: How long do I stare before I take action$%: You lose patience and you try fast forward then reverse and finally stop. Then the FBI and Interpol and then again in French then Ice age 2 now on available on DVD then scene selection, man this is great nothing like watching a good movie!

So now you begin your detective work, maybe I should have let the director talk maybe he could have told me what scene that was$%: Ah here it is it's right before the one entitled
Hero dies nothing like a good mystery huh$%: Back in the Stone Age a bad movie was just a disappointment but now in the age of DVD's it's more than that if for no other reason than you feel you have so much effort invested.
